Advanced Git Workshop

Advanced Git Workshop

A pilot two half-day hands-on in-person workshop teaching advanced version control techniques with Git.

The NWO-I Digital Competence Center is organising a pilot workshop on Advanced Git.
This hands-on, two-day in-person training takes you beyond the basics of version control and focuses on real collaboration workflows. It builds directly on the Software Carpentry curriculum (Shell, Git, Python) and helps you move from individual use of Git to effective teamwork and contribution to open-source scientific software.

We’ll work with materials from CodeRefinery and Learn Git Branching to explore merging strategies, branching models, collaborative workflows, and contribution patterns used in major research software projects.

Who is this for?

Researchers, engineers, and research software developers at NWO institutes who already use Git for their own work and want to collaborate more effectively.
If places remain, registration will be opened for VU and UvA participants.

Lunch will be provided for participants (sign up before Thursday, January 15).

Prerequisites

To participate, you should have:

  1. Basic Git knowledge, either from the Git module of Software Carpentry or equivalent experience (e.g., follow a self-paced Version Control with Git lesson by the Carpentries or Introduction to Git workshop by CodeRefinery).
You should already know how to use Git from the command line for a local project (clone, add, commit, push, pull, basic branching).
  2. A GitHub account and working Git on your laptop.

Setup instructions for the Carpentries novice Git lesson can be found here:
